Thought-Of-The-Day: September 15th

Nursery rhymes and children’s songs cover some pretty adult themes.

Ring around the roses is an example that will be familiar to many. The rhyme references the plague and ends up with falling down dead.

One of the songs I listen to with the boys involves a monkey that slides down an elephant’s trunk causing the elephant to sneeze and fall down. On the CD that has the same name as the song, the following line is “What became of the monkey?” Seems innocent enough. The same song however is on another of the CDs we listen to, and the line is instead “That was the end of the monkey.”

There’s another song that talks about enemies dead, burning and exiled. And another that I’m fairly sure is about a prostitute…

I suppose it’s good that the darker themes will go over children’s heads. Even adults who are familiar with the songs may not pick up on them.

Love,

Lady Joyful
